Tips for those who decide to start riding a motorbike in Thailand

Coming to Thailand, and especially to Phuket, tourists are faced with such an unexpected problem as the virtual complete absence of public transport. You can’t walk much under the hot sun, a taxi is also not cheap at all, the only option left is to rent a vehicle in Thailand: a car or a motorbike. Let's look at the situation with the bike.

We definitely do not recommend that you ride a bike without a license. The correct category of license to drive a motorbike in Thailand is category A! Category M allows you to drive scooters with an engine power of no more than 50 cubic meters; such scooters simply do not exist in Thailand; the engine power of most motorbikes in Thailand exceeds 100 cubic meters.

And so: You don't have a driving licens? Is your driving experience bad too? Here are some tips for you that we hope will help maintain your health when riding a motorbike.

1) Don't ride without a helmet. Yes, it’s hot in it, and it ruins your hair, but it can save your life. Especially if you do not have the necessary driving experience. Yes, and if there is,
no one is immune from tragic accidents. And a helmet can really help prevent them. For one you will save money on fines.

2) One of the most common mistakes that inexperienced drivers make is to twist the throttle too much. The throttle is on the right, and it is very sensitive, so without experience,
It is better to unscrew it as slowly and smoothly as possible in the direction “away from you” in order to feel the moment of movement and not be afraid. If you unscrew it too quickly and too hard, the bike will suddenly take off, and you, not having the proper experience, will fly after it, pretty scared and possibly seriously scratched,
and it’s good if you don’t drive into any obstacle in the form of an expensive car...

3) You need to brake with two brakes at once, squeezing them, if possible, smoothly and simultaneously. If you use the rear brake, the rear wheel will lock, the bike will skid, and you will fall. If you apply the front brake,
there is a very serious risk of flying over the steering wheel towards the asphalt... No matter what happens, three fingers of the left hand (little finger, ring finger and middle finger) and the index finger of the right hand must be on the brakes constantly while driving, and in If an obstacle arises, you need to apply both brakes at once, as smoothly as possible.
how long does the braking distance allow?

4) If it happens that your motorbike falls, before picking it up, remove the key from the ignition. Because you will be lifting it by the steering wheel, and the right handlebar, as we remember, regulates the speed, and if you forgetfully grab it to lift the bike -
The rear wheel will start spinning and the bike will drag you along the asphalt. In this case, you are guaranteed to have torn knees.

5) Even if the traffic light turns green for you, before crossing the intersection, look around and make sure that no one is rushing headlong to cut you off when the light turns red. Yes,
the green light is on for you, and the one who drives on the red one is violating the traffic rules, but your health is yours, and it is better to make sure that nothing threatens him.

6) If you are driving in the far left lane, carefully watch out for cars overtaking or driving in front of you, and when approaching any left turn, it is better to slow down, or be ready to brake. Many drivers lack driving culture and do not turn on their turn signals when turning, which means either you can accidentally drive into them when they turn, or they will knock you into a ditch. Moreover, the car has blind spots when the driver simply cannot see you in the mirrors.

7) Do not overtake cars in the direction of travel. That is, when a car is making a U-turn, you don’t need to go around it in front, you risk driving into it. It is better to stop and wait until the driver completes the maneuver.
8) Keep your distance. You don't need to drive too close to the vehicle in front of you.
In case of emergency braking, you may not have time to react.

9) Drive with caution on gravel and sand, there is a high risk of skidding. It is better to drive slowly, protecting yourself from falling with your feet. For the same reason, you need to drive with caution along the side of the road.

10) Remember that at the beginning of the rain the road is the most dangerous and slippery,
and the likelihood of skidding increases. Limit your speed.

10) The best shoes for riding a bike are not flip-flops, they're sneakers! Because they will protect you, in case of a fall, from abrading your foot on the asphalt.

11) When renting a bike, take a video of it in a circle to record any damage.
This will help you avoid a dispute when returning it about who scratched it and how much it will now cost you.

12) Do not leave documents as collateral, only money. Otherwise, when returning, you may face extortion for non-existent damage.

13) Remember that there is a fine for driving without a license of the required category (at the time of writing, it is 1000 Baht). But this is not the worst thing, what is much worse is that the insurance company may refuse to reimburse you for treatment costs if you do not have the rights of the required category (category A), and paying for treatment yourself in Thailand is very, very expensive. But that’s not all again... If you don’t have a license in the required category, you may automatically be found to be at fault for an accident, even if you are not at fault. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you first get your license and then get on the bike. If things don’t work out with your license at all, be as careful as possible on the roads. otherwise it can cost you a lot.

14) And about the pleasant thing, all motobikes (if the owner has paid the annual tax) are insured, but the insurance doesn't cover the repair of your vehicle, nor the other party, but it insures the health of the driver and passenger! The amount of coverage is very modest, about 1000 USD, but anything is better than nothing.
